One Tree Hill is a culturally significant place for both Maori and other New Zealanders and no cultural tour of Auckland would be complete without stopping here. In pre-european times One Tree Hill or Maungakiekie as it's called in Maori, was the largest Pa (Fortress) in New Zealand. The hill provided an easily defended position until it was abandoned around 1795. Although the Pa is gone, it's still a key place for Maori Culture Tours to visit in Auckland.
Learn Auckland's history by hearing stories of the Pioneers
Owned at one point by Sir John Logan Campbell, the park and One Tree Hill was eventually left to the city and even today a large chunk of the park is still a working farm. The tour of Auckland passes through this working farm within one of Auckland's most beautiful parks you'll see Cattle and Sheep and get a glimpse of one of the key parts of the New Zealand culture.
